The cards could be sold to postal administrations or post offices under contracts signed in the late 1920s which gave Y&T the right to draw up and print the catalogs on their own. Y&T was the only company able to meet the needs of the French postal service, and it remained the only catalog to be produced until the start of World War II. The first catalogue to be published in 1935, the 1936 and 1937 issues were sold in sets of four at ten francs each.
Each catalogue included reference stamps for each of the postal administrations that were used at the time (this practice continued until 1955), along with five-hundred stamps selected from the main themes of the catalog. Various plates and an index were available to supplement the catalog.
The first two catalogues were printed on coated cardboard with a cellophane outer cover. Over the years, the books continued to grow in size, with the 24th volume of the Y&T catalog being several inches thick. The 8th volume of the Scott catalog, on the other hand, was less than two inches thick.
While reference library catalogues continue to increase in size and sophistication over time, the photographic book has become an accepted form. Its first commercial publication dates to 1855 in the catalog of a prominent London firm, G. T. Fisher of Bond Street (Gilmour 1888: 115). By the end of the century, the books sold by London booksellers ranged from small-scale almanacs to elaborate books featuring gold and silver plate and lavish bindings. Some of these commercial photographers produced hundreds of books, almost all featuring multiple portfolios of over 1,000 images (Hart-Davis 1977: 33). By the early 1900s, when more affordable photography became possible, specialized international firms began to replace the London firms as publishers (Hart-Davis 1977: 34).
